It's that time again...
Below you will find everything you need to prepare for the 3rd Quarter Test, which is currently scheduled for:
  • Tuesday, March 5 for Periods 1-3

This test has three delightful, entertaining, and informative sections for your educational enjoyment. Let's check 'em out!

  • Section I:  Matching, 30 points
  • Section II:  Multiple Choice, 50 points
  • Section III:  Essay, 30 points
  • Total:  110 points, taken out of 100 (10 points extra credit)

Now, let's look at that in a little more detail...

Section I: Matching Names/Terms/Concepts
30 of the names/terms/concepts on the Quizlet below will appear as terms to match to their definition or description.
  • Each term is worth 1 point each, 30 points total this section.

Section II: Multiple Choice
There will be 50 multiple choice questions on the exam, taken from the form embedded below. The questions cover everything we have learned so far this quarter. Please be aware that there are more than 50 practice questions on this form, and while only 50 will appear on the test, there will be multiple versions of the test, meaning you could potentially see any of these questions.
  • 50 Multiple Choice Questions, 1 point per question, 50 points total this section.
  • By the way- if you right click in the frame below and then select Reload Frame from the menu, the questions and answers will be re-scrambled.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE LOGGED IN TO YOUR STUDENT GOOGLE ACCOUNT
to access this form, otherwise it will not work.

Section III: Essays
Choose ONE of the questions below, and be prepared to answer it in class on the day of the test. You may not use any notes on the day of the test, but you may certainly prepare your answer in advance. The essay you choose is the one you answer- you do not need to be prepared to answer any other question from this list.
    1. Explain the Biblical 'Minimalist' and 'Maximalist' positions with regard to the historicity of the Exodus. What evidence supports each position? How might each position be understood in light of contemporary issues in Religion and Politics? What is at stake in the claims of each position?
    2. Explain the importance of Deuteronomy 18:15 to the idea of a "True Prophet" in the Old Testament and in the portrayals of Jesus in the Gospels (particularly the Gospel of Matthew)
    3. Discuss the importance of the revelation of the Divine Name in the Torah and its relevance to the portrayals of Jesus in the Gospels of Mark and John.
    4. Discuss the significance of the Passover in the Torah and in the portrayals of Jesus' death in the synoptics and the gospel of John.
    5. The Book of Judges is considered controversial because of its depiction of the practice of the "ban" and stories involving the mistreatment of women. Discuss the examples of these issues we considered in class, then explain what purpose these stories serve in the total narrative of the Deuteronomistic History. Why is it mistaken to see these stories as examples of moral problems with the Bible, as opposed to seeing them as highlighting moral problems in the Bible?
    6. Explain the significance of King David in the Old Testament, and discuss how his reign came to shape Jewish expectations of a future messiah. Be sure to include in your answer examples of how/why those expectations are found in the oracles of the Latter Prophets and the Psalms. Give examples of ways in which those expectations shape the gospel portrayals of Jesus.
    7. We've discussed five "Messianic Archetypes" in the Old Testament so far: Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, and Elijah (technically, also Isaac). Briefly explain what is significant about the life of each one, and explain how each influences the gospel portrayals of Jesus in the New Testament.

        The Class Presentations
If you need them, I've provided links to PDFs of the PowerPoints I used in class. Remember that you are always required to take notes, and you are expected to have your notes in class every day, so if you are missing answers to questions in your notes pages, make sure to use these presentations to address that.
